Asphalt, also known as bitumen, is a petroleum-based liquid or semi-solid that is black, sticky, and extremely viscous. It is an essential part of building roads, mostly utilized as a binder in the asphalt concrete mixture that is used to make the road surfaces. Asphalt pavement can tolerate high traffic volumes and a range of weather conditions. It is also reasonably inexpensive to build and maintain.
To lay asphalt, it must first be heated to an elevated temperature and then combined with aggregate (crushed stone, gravel, or sand) to form asphalt concrete. The road surface is then created by applying and compacting this mixture. Because asphalt is water-resistant, it is also used in waterproofing, sealing, and roofing materials. It’s also frequently utilized in the building of parking lots, racetracks, and airport runways.
Types of Asphalt:
Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA): The most popular kind of asphalt used in road construction is hot mix asphalt (HMA). It is produced at temperatures between 300 °F and 350 °F, and it is brought hot to the building site. HMA works well in a variety of weather and traffic situations.
Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA): Usually produced between 200°F and 250°F, WMA is produced at lower temperatures than HMA. Lower production temperatures lead to less energy use, less emissions, and better workability while building.
Cold Mix Asphalt: Unlike HMA and WMA, cold mix asphalt can be produced and applied at ambient temperatures. It is mostly applied for temporary repairs, patching, or in remote locations where hot mix plants are not available.
