In general BUILDING means it has walls and roof on it, but, in civil engineering term building is a structure having foundations, walls, columns, floors, staircase etc. As a civil engineer is mainly associated with the construction of buildings, it is important to get acquainted and have good knowledge of various components of a building.
The society requires different types of buildings for its various activities such as
- Business buildings like offices, shops, banks, stores etc.
- Educational buildings such as schools, colleges, universities etc.
- Industrial buildings like factories, workshops, pumping stations, gas plants, dairies etc.
- Recreation buildings like theatres, cinema halls, town halls, clubs etc.
- Residential buildings like bungalows, villas, row houses, flats etc.
- Storage buildings like go-downs, warehouses, cold storages etc.
- Worship buildings like temples, churches, mosque etc.
As far as construction of any building is concerned, procedures are almost same for various buildings but it is the engineer who selects the most appropriate method for the type of building to be constructed.

Group A: Residential Buildings
Group B: Educational Buildings
Group C: Institutional Buildings
